I don’t know if it’s the superstitious in me, but whenever I find out its Mercury Retrograde, I do pay attention to certain things. And, please know I’m not someone that totally believes in all of this stuff – like, at all. But, if you put a contract in front of me right now, I am going to read it at least three times before I sign.
And, funny enough after writing this first paragraph I went off to teach my morning online class and there were a slew of tech issues that happened all at once. It made me chuckle in the thick of it, thinking, “Do you really want to take on the topic of Mercury Retrograde this week?”
For those of you that have no idea what I’m talking about, let me catch you up on all things Mercury Retrograde.
As the name suggests “retrograde” is when a planet appears to go backward from Earth. It’s actually an illusion. All planets move on their trajectory without going backwards ever. But, from our vantage point, it looks like it does.
Astrologers believe that the moon, planets, sun, and stars affect happenings here on Earth. In Greek mythology, the god Mercury governed transportation and communication. So, those that dread when Mercury (the planet) is in retrograde tend to believe that this leads to chaos in our everyday lives. Mercury Retrograde is blamed for tech issues, communication blunders, lost mail, botched contracts, missing luggage, fender benders, and arguments.
But, I’m going to put a positive spin on this whole thing because we are in the beginnings of a Mercury Retrograde through February 19th, 2021 and positive thinking is just how I roll.
YOU are the sole creator of your life.
So, if you think the next couple of weeks are going to be a big bag of poop because of the planet alignment, then guess what? They are.
And, even if you are someone that loves to blame the stuff of life on Mercury Retrograde and think that I’m nuts for doubting its powers, I want to remind you that life can get pretty tricky when Mercury is nowhere near being in retrograde.
So, instead I have a list of ‘do’s ‘and ‘don’t do’s’ during this time that I think we can all agree upon:
Don’t take things personally.
This is just great advice pretty much all of the time. Everyone is doing the best they can. If you feel like someone’s throwing some bad energy your way, dodge it and move on. Take the path of least resistance. Take care of you. Whatever their perception of you – it’s none of your business.
Avoid making big commitments.
Listen, you can’t shut your life down over Mercury Retrograde, but if you can stave off making a major commitment this might be the time to do it. But, if you can’t, read the small print, look over the contract more than twice, and ask as many questions as possible before you move into the commitment.
The big review.
This is a wonderful time to take a look at what is working and what is not working. Some of the things that cause extra chaos and stress don’t even need to be done anymore. If you are doing something and you know you are supposed to, in every fiber of your being, do that thing, but it feels like you’re climbing uphill, then maybe find a new way of doing it so you are floating down the river instead.
Get together with old friends.
Amen to this. Instead of worrying about Mercury Retrograde and being a huge bummer about it all, call an old friend and catch up. I think this is a way more productive way to use your time. Why? Because the more you’re focused on what can go wrong, the more things will go wrong. So, instead connect with people that make you feel good and take the time to strengthen the relationships that have meant the most to you through the years.
Clean out your closet or any of the catch-all spaces in your home.
If you don’t use it, it has to go. It’s a simple as that. And, someone else might be dying to use it, wear it, repurpose it, etc. Keep the flow of gratitude, giving and receiving going.
Forgive and forget.
Hey, guys. Forgiveness is one of the most selfish acts you can do. And, I know some of you are thinking, “Sure, I can forgive, but I cannot forget.” If your brain keeps mulling over a situation over and over again. If it’s all you talk about and think about, there’s a pretty simple solution. Focus on something else. Think about something else. Choose something positive, something that makes you super excited, something that brings you joy.
Like I said in the beginning, YOU are creating your life. You can either take the Mercury Retrogrades and make something awesome out of them, or use them as something to blame, to worry about, to be fearful of, to lean into the god-its-so-awful mind frame that sucks all of the good flow out and away from you.
But, I know you can do better than that. I know you can take this time to create something you’ll be proud of - something like a life you truly love.
